This volume controller is unbelievable good sounding.
At first I was considering the less expensive version of this unit, But I said to my self, What the heck,If I Don't try the sound of expensive resistors now, Then when ? Life's too short. So That's why I bought this RA version.
This unit replaced a similar relay based stepped VC that I bought from another vendor, But only uses ordinary 1% metal resistor, I did'nt expect the sound would be any different, Since the old one is also well made and uses the same brand of relay, But when I finally hooked this unit up on the A-33 chassis using the very same line stage I was using before, The difference in sound quality is readily apparent, The difference is not subtle, but very clear even from the first listen. The sound quality of this VC is much better than my old one , And I attribute the difference for the better to the expensive RA resistors used for attenuation.
I haven't listened to the less expensive version of this VC , But I think the money will not be wasted if you buy this version, I now have the best sounding preamp that I have ever heard. If a commercial preamp uses this kind of quality of a volume control, I'm sure it would cost no less than $3,500-.
